Films for September 2011 – step away from the rom-com

Break out of your rom-com rut by taking a chance on these films coming out over the next month.

The Skin I Live In – out 26 August
From director Pedro Almodovar (Volver, All About My Mother) comes this intriguing film starring Antonio Banderas as a plastic surgeon trying to perfect artificial skin that doesn’t damage. Bet they don’t show this on Harley Street.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy – out 16 September
If you enjoyed the espionage of the just-finished Beeb programme The Hour, try this adaptation of John le Carre. The cast couldn’t get much better than this: Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Colin Firth, Ralph Fiennes and Toby Jones.

Melancholia – out 30 September
Who wouldn’t be looking forward to a sci-fi film about two sisters, one with a mood disorder? Lars von Trier’s film divided critics at Cannes but judging from the crazy trailer, this is one we have to see for ourselves.

If only the cinema wasn’t so expensive in London – I know what I’ll be doing on a lot of Orange Wednesdays this autumn! Tinker… especially looks good.

I really want to see Melancholia – the trailer is so intriguing, and did you see the interview with Kirsten D in this month’s Elle?

I ended up going to see The Skin I Live In on saturday, it was REALLY good, I think it’s instantly become my favourite Almodovar. It was pretty uncomfortabel viewing at times though.
