For four weeks only (it started last week), the show that started life at the Edinburgh Fringe last Summer will be on every Saturday at midday at the Old Red Lion in Islington. This is a limited run to see if the lunchtime slot proves as popular as it did at the Fringe.
Brought to you by the unashamedly left-leaning Lampoon Apathy and sharing that Have I Got News For You/Mock the Week blueprint, Crunch the News takes a generous helping of the weeks’ current affairs and serves it up for a panel of guests to digest. There are some awesome names on the bill, including my personal favourites, comedians Josie Long and Sara Pascoe. Hosting duties will be shared between funnyman John Luke Roberts and MP Sir Ian Bowler (who may or may not be a real Tory MP).
“The basic format is several comics plus a host (both hilarious), discussing the events of the day, playing the odd game, handing out chocolate and generally having fun,” says Neil Hughes from Lampoon Apathy. Last week, the panel discussed “whether or not the EU is an evil fascist megastate,” plus Nick Clegg and his onesie. I look forward to seeing how they handle the Algerian hostage crisis and the impending annual Snowmaggedon transport doom tomorrow.
Crunch the News is on every Saturday from 19th January to 2nd February 2013, 12-1.15pm at the Old Red Lion theatre, 418 Saint John Street London EC1V 4NJ. Tickets are £5, you can buy them online here or on the door. Visit the Facebook event page.
