Like most international megastars, Rihanna doesn’t stop at singing. She is a brand, and a brand who follows the modern-day tradition of slapping their name on everything from perfume to lipstick in order to generate additional income alongside her ‘day job’. This is nothing new (most luxury designers actually only make a fraction of their fortune through their ready-to-wear lines, the rest is generated via accessories and cosmetics sales), so it wasn’t much of a shock when River Island managed to broker a deal with the ‘Dia-munnnnds’ singer to launch her own clothing line a few months back.
Despite managing to find absolutely no-one who could take the initial Spring collection seriously at the time, it still, according to RI, sold out. Now I won’t jump to conclusions, but as a trained designer myself, I hazard to guess she had sweet eff all to do with the nitty-gritty side of putting this collaboration together. I can’t imagine Rhi Rhi toiling for some reason. So imagine my surprise when the next installment of the ‘Rihanna For River Island’ love affair dropped on 25th May and actually threw up some decent pieces, or ‘diamonds’ if you will (geddit?!). The Summer collection, available in selected stores and online, has still met with mixed reviews but personally I see a vast improvement. Either way, River Island are still laughing all the way to the bank, whilst watching Topshop, get sued by the Bajan beauty for using her mug to sell t-shirts without her consent. She may or may not have limited input on the actual design process, but at least River Island are doing things legit.
