Style & Then Some

5 of the best : Kimonos

This party season there’s a hint of the orient around the Christmas tree. The kimono, which translates from Japanese as simply ‘thing to wear’, is making waves across the high street and is the perfect antidote to chillier weather.

The AW13 catwalks were littered with nods to classic Japanese style. Structured dresses with oriental graphic prints were a feature at Marni. At Balmain velvet jackets dripped with heavy oriental brocading. Much like the bolero, the kimono is a glamorous evening alternative to a wrap or black cardie (yawn).

Throw a silk kimono over a pair of jeans and a vest top and you’ll go from dressed down to sophisticated faster than you can say soft shell crab sushi. The kimono is a brilliant bingo-wing cover up and with so many beautiful styles to pick from, you can bet you’ll find an excellent ‘thing to wear’ with your Christmas cocktail of choice.
