Why it’s Ashish of course. Ahead of the Ashish show at London Fashion Week on Monday, Topshop announced that the next collection will be mark ten years of collaborating with the sequinaholic designer Ashish Gupta. Landing in late May, the collection promises to ’embody the world of camera facing celebrities, on holiday, relaxing and partying.’ All sounds a bit papp-happy doesn’t it? Gupta says he is more excited about the partnership than ever, because ‘this is the biggest project we have ever done together.’
What can we expect from the big new project? No word on the clothing yet, but some shoes have been revealed – they trod the catwalk on Monday in the Topshop show space in Tate Modern. If you long to relive your Wannabe days, you’re in luck. These huge white lace-up Buffalo boots with mega platform soles and two rows of LED lights are so Spice Girls it hurts.
And if the mainline show is anything to go by (check out photos below), the clothes will be nineties-centric too. Alongside lots of baggy and ruffled blue denim, sequinned tracksuits and grey PE kit sweats, Gupta through in a whole load of princess pink and lavender tulle, much of it in mille-feuille box pleats. This autumnal offering wasn’t actually as sequin-dependent as previous seasons, but he still sequinnified a good few bomber jackets and track pants too.
Perhaps most telling was the pairing of those tulle prom dresses with the Buffalo trainers. Sounds very Smile era Lily Allen right? Could it be that Gupta is done plundering the nineties and is moving on to the noughties? And guess who was sat front row? That would be one Lily Allen.
