One of those trends that ended up on the catwalks – rather than springing from the sketches of a designer – the bomber jacket in its latest incarnation originated in the sporting arena, bearing more resemblance to an American football jacket than the military uniform from which it got its name. This raglan-sleeved, letterman style filtered up via ‘the street’ i.e. style bloggers took photos of hipsters wearing them. Having come full circle, the spring catwalks were basically carpet bombed with them, from DKNY’s black silk longline NFL style to Balenciaga’s patchwork denim version. Having been on the high street for a few seasons now, the athletic hallmarks are less evident in the latest crop of bombers, making it a more versatile proposition. Here are five textured bomber jackets that won’t make you look like an NFL player.
Bellfield Denim Bomber Jacket, £50, ASOS
Acid-washed and oversized, make this the replacement for that shrunken, ripped denim jacket you’ve been meaning to ditch for years.
Tapestry Jacquard Bomber Jacket, £59.99, Mango
Bring a delicate Delft pottery vibe to the often manly bomber, this is pretty enough to wear over a dress to an early Spring wedding.
F&F Lace Bomber Jacket, £20, Tesco
Not so hot from a practical point of view (it’s basically see-through) but this black lace bomber will most definitely get you sparking.
