Part of Her World: How Mermaids are on course to be 2015’s big trend

Since Sofia Coppola announced she was to recreate Hans Christian Andersen’s fishy fairytale ‘The Little Mermaid’ in non-animated celluloid, it appears all things Mermaid are set to be one of 2015’s biggest trends. Forget your sparkly vampires of yesteryear, the future is potentially lurking at the bottom of the ocean.

And why will mermaids be a hit trend I hear you ask? Well, for starters SOFIA COPPOLA is remaking THE LITTLE MERMAID. What more do you need? This woman’s films are basically the blueprint for whatever teen angst-ridden music, fashions, ideas and attitudes are percolating around the time. The only actress so far cast is the transsexual model Andrej Pejic as one of Ariel’s stunning sisters, and no doubt every young Hollywood actress is clamouring over the starring role. Just check out this sketch AnnaSophia Robb aced for Funny or Die:

But it isn’t just the movie that’s a tell-tail sign things are happening under the sea. Australian clothing company Black Milk Clothing has tapped in to the fact some of us never really grow out of our favourite Disney princesses and they have released a range of hipster-style Disney inspired outfits:

As well as this, a new mermaid-inspired fitness class has (literally) kicked off in the Philippines where you actually don a mermaid (or merman) tail and work on your core strength by not using your legs to swim. As well as obviously taking a zillion photos of you as a mermaid! The class is only around 40 dollars and surely worth the mermaid memories.  You can find out more about the Philippine Mermaid Swimming Academy here.
