Style & Then Some

AW Key Trend: Velvet

Let me take you back to 2001, and the toilets of my middle school. It was the end of term disco. I was busting a crushed velvet top with draped sleeves, pretty sure it was from Tesco. I looked fly. In the years that followed, I’ve often thought about that top and how heinous it was. Little did I know, I was just 15 years ahead of my time.

Is there anything more autumn-winter than velvet? So festive, so warm, so jazzy. What makes it such an enduring look is that it spans eras; present in Poldark-era dresses, Victorian coronation ensembles and 1980s cocktail parties alike. You can make it a little bit Princess Di, or a little bit Morticia Addams as the occasion dictates. It’s not just for Christmas or a night out; casual it up by combining it with bardot styling, as championed by omnipresent It girls like Hadids plural and Kendall Jenner.

Here are our high street picks for velveting your life this season (warning, people may want to touch your clothes):

H&M Trousers, £29.99
Zara Boots, £45.99
